Periodontal Maintenance

in Calabash, NC

When a tooth is severely damaged, it becomes weak and vulnerable. Without the right restoration, it may cause pain, further damage, or even lead to the tooth breaking.

A dental crown acts as a protective shield, covering the tooth, restoring its strength, and returning it to its natural form.

What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a cap that fits over a damaged or weakened tooth, covering it completely.

Crowns are made from high-quality materials such as porcelain, zirconia, or porcelain fused to metal, offering strength, durability, and a natural appearance. They are also designed to mimic the shape, color, and function of your natural teeth.

When Do You Need Dental Crowns?

Deeb and fanning

You may need a dental crown if:

  • Your tooth is severely decayed or broken
  • You’ve had a root canal treatment
  • Your tooth is misshapen or has a large filling that needs additional support
  • You want to improve the appearance of a tooth
  • You’ve lost a tooth and need a dental bridge for replacement

How Are Crowns Made?

The process of getting a dental crown usually requires two visits to our office. During the first appointment, we will remove any decay, shape the tooth, and fit it with a temporary crown.

On the second visit, we’ll remove the temporary crown and fit the final custom crown. After ensuring proper fit and appearance, we will cement it in place.

How Long Do Crowns Last?

On average, dental crowns last between 10-15 years, though some can last even longer depending on the materials used and how well you maintain your oral hygiene.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

  • Restore strength and support to damaged teeth
  • Improve the appearance of your smile
  • Prevent further damage or decay
  • Ideal for replacing missing teeth with a dental bridge
  • Long-lasting and durable solution
